What is Hypnosis? What is hypnotica? About Nancy "Ace" Ava Miller, M.Ed., CHt Lose Weight Hypnosis and You |

After midnight one Xmastime,
while I was listening to after-hours radio host Art Bell, a commercial interrupted his
ramblings about UFO’s, alien abductions, and conspiracy theories. The ad discussed hypnosis training. I caught a toll-free number and—despite the late hour—dialed and
deposited my message on the friendly, automated answering system for the
______________ Hypnotherapy Academy. The school turned out to be located one hour from my secluded mountain home. A few days later, a faculty member called back, at which point I whipped out my VISA and signed up for six months (350 hours) of hypnotherapy classes. Thus began my intense sojourn into the scrutiny and study of hypnosis. The subject was not unfamiliar to me, however. At age 20, you see, I bore my second child—Eric—while under hypnosis. The OB told me I’d feel no labor pain, just warm waves caressing my body, and—by Goddess!—that’s what I felt—quite a switch from the 36 hours of agony I endured at Portsmouth Naval Hospital in 1965 when my initial kid—Debby—moseyed out of the womb. So enamored was I with hypnosis about the time of Eric’s birth that, mimicking my doctor, I proceeded to mesmerize my buddies into somnambulistic spells every chance I got. They loved it and I loved the power and control of entrancing them! ![]() A few years later—having discovered another power, that of Transcendental Meditation (TM)—I found myself traipsing around the globe in pursuit of cosmic consciousness vis-à-vis the teachings of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. In fact, on the Atlantic coast of Spain in 1973, I became a TM teacher when the white-robed monk uttered the sweet, sacred, secret and super-duper mantras in my ear, after which I returned to the US where I initiated hundreds (maybe thousands?) into the ancient spiritual tradition of the great gurus and the Vedic masters, of which Maharishi and TM are a part. I taught TM for a while in the Washington, DC, area, then returned to grad school, earning in 1981 my Master’s degree with its emphasis on English education, group dynamics, group communication and creative writing. Over the decades, I taught public school, headed creative writing classes for adults, wrote professionally (and shot photos) for magazines and newspapers, studied art four years at the famed Corcoran Gallery in Washington, led sex ed support groups and Tough Love gatherings, counseled, consulted, lectured, and founded a successful support and networking organization. Today, hypnotherapy fits right
in with all my other people-oriented, help-oriented, and creative interests. Now, at age 56, I am possessed
with a vision: The vision of change and good that hypnosis can provide. As with TM, hypnosis allows a person, naturally and easily, to drift
within towards—as the Maharishi might say—that “vast reservoir of pure
consciousness,” the seat of
energy and bliss. From this
place—this quiet repose and source of one’s thinking and strength—great
possibilities arise: The potential
for improved health, for example, and increased love; release from fear, sorrow,
worry, guilt, grief, addiction, procrastination, financial woes, the cycle of
obesity; freedom from mental, physical, spiritual and emotional pain; further
liberation from unfulfilled expectations regarding people, places and things
over which one holds no control.Today—for seekers of the better life, for those concerned about the planet, or society, or creativity or their love lives/sex lives, I offer Amazing! Transcendental Hypnotica!—an amalgam of hypnosis (of course), recognized therapies, meditation, yoga, counseling, breathing exercises support groups, and more. |
